Summer placement student reflects on rewarding experience at UKSBS

As the summer draws to a close, Nadine is heading back to the University of Bristol to continue her BSc in Economics and Management, following a two-month summer placement at UKSBS. Looking back on her time with us, Nadine reflected on everything she learned and the impact the experience has had on her professional development.

In Nadine’s words

"My summer placement at UKSBS has been an incredibly rewarding experience. The core values of the company are genuinely reflected in its people, who supported me and invested care into my development. With their encouragement, I was able to build confidence and skills that directly align with my future career aspirations and university degree, while feeling like a valued member of a great team. A big thank you to everyone involved!"

Developing skills for the future

Nadine came into her placement wanting to build her understanding of the business environment and gain practical business and project management experience to take into her second-year modules – giving her a head start on the learning to come. Over her time with us, she developed valuable professional skills including report writing, analysis and presentation skills, as well as building confidence, relationship building and communication skills.

With her sights set on a future career in management consultancy, colleagues made sure Nadine had the chance to learn from experienced Deloitte consultants working alongside UKSBS and get involved in projects that aligned directly with her career aspirations. The team listened to her ideas, embraced them, and gave her the space to take a brief and deliver valuable outcomes for the business.

Fresh thinking for UKSBS

Investing in young talent benefits UKSBS too. Early-career colleagues often bring fresh perspectives and new ideas, helping us challenge our thinking, learn from one another and continue improving how we work.

Nandita Sharma, Nadine’s line manager over the summer said:

Meet People Nandita Sharma

"Nadine brought real energy, curiosity and fresh thinking to every piece of work she touched. Her day-to-day work sat mainly within Business Change, but the value she generated reached wider than that. We gained a fresh perspective, and colleagues across UKSBS had the opportunity to engage with and help develop emerging talent."

A placement shaped around the individual

It's this tailored approach that sets the UKSBS placement experience apart. As Nandita explained: "Hopefully, we have contributed positively to how UKSBS is viewed as an organisation that invests in early-career development. Being a small organisation means UKSBS can shape support around the individual, and through the commitment of our people we can offer a tailored placement experience that enables people to grow in ways that support their future career aspirations."

Two months can provide the right amount of time for a meaningful placement experience. "It provides a quality experience, allowing time to settle and get to know our business and colleagues, while allowing enough time to get your teeth into some meaty projects and practical experience."

Wishing Nadine every success

A huge thank you to Nandita Sharma and Elliot Brady, and to everyone across UKSBS who supported Nadine throughout her placement. We're proud of what Nadine achieved during her time with us, and we wish her every success as she returns to the University of Bristol and continues working towards her future career.
