From curiosity to capability: building AI skills for the future

UKSBS is helping colleagues turn curiosity about artificial intelligence into practical capability, building the skills and confidence to use AI responsibly and explore how it could support better ways of working and improved services.

AI Week Digital Leaders

During AI Week 2026, colleagues will hear real examples from across UKSBS, develop their understanding and consider how AI could help with everyday tasks.

The focus is on practical, responsible use. Examples being shared include using AI to find and analyse information, generate ideas and reduce repetitive or time-consuming activity. This can create more time for work that depends on people’s expertise, judgement and relationships.

Building skills and confidence

AI Week also reflects the wider investment UKSBS is making in developing AI capability across the organisation. Alongside exploring practical uses of AI today, UKSBS is supporting colleagues and leaders to build the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to adopt AI responsibly through apprenticeship-funded learning opportunities and new AI leadership development programmes.

“During my apprenticeship, Copilot has helped me develop my skills in Excel, Power Query and Word. Using what I learned, I created automated quality monitoring and reporting tools that save time, reduce manual effort and improve consistency across the team.”

Beverley Leach, Operational Assurance Administrator
James Cartwright

“My apprenticeship has helped me develop valuable digital and AI skills, particularly in data visualisation. I can now turn complex data into clear insights that help teams spot trends, target improvements and make better-informed decisions.”

James Cartwright, Operations Excellence Lead

Keeping people at the centre

Human oversight remains central to how UKSBS approaches AI. Colleagues are responsible for checking AI-generated outputs, handling information appropriately and making final decisions. This helps the organisation explore new ways of working while maintaining the trust placed in its services.

Looking ahead

AI Week is one step in UKSBS’s continuing journey to use technology in ways that improve how it works and supports better services. By combining responsible innovation with the knowledge and experience of its people, UKSBS is building capability for the future.
