When I joined UK SBS in 2013, I had been looking for a new role that would use and develop skills from my background working in a bank. I had experience of specialist areas which were part of the Newport-based Finance team’s work, so I applied and was successful. Since then, I have been able to progress.
Progressing through experience
I have been promoted up two grades since I started, and I now manage three teams. Taking the opportunity to work in different areas of Finance has developed my skills and I also covered a role on a temporary basis for a year. My first promotion came when I applied for a vacancy.
I encourage everyone in my team to progress, and two have advanced through temporary promotion which will broaden their skills and experience.
Learning from colleagues
I’ve always learnt from colleagues who have been generous with their knowledge. I often find an answer to a question by discussing it, including with colleagues from different teams.
I am studying for the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) level 5, and I’ve found colleagues based in Swindon and Billingham and other teams here in Newport very helpful – seeing the way that they do things, and applying the course learning to this has made me consider new and improved ways to do things.
I enjoy having a direct relationship with clients and it’s the trust I’ve been given to use my skills that has given me this level of confidence. It’s an example of how UK SBS encourages and empowers employees to take responsibility.
